Yvonne Fair's rather striking version of this old Motown semi-classic did nothing in the US but became a surprise Top 5 hit in the UK, spawning a whole generation of drag queens lip-synching "Somebody call the Po-lice! That woman down there is a doggone thief!"
The 7" and 12" mixes of this track are so different they're practically different records - to my ears the 7" sounds completely dull and flat in comparison to the magnificent 12" mix here.
Have posted the 7" version for comparison (video response).
Both were US top 20 hits - 'Special' was actually the bigger hit (#12 against #18 for 'My Mistake') but the consensus is that 'My Mistake' is much the better of the two, it's certainly the one which is better-remembered nowadays.
At last, here's the one that most people have asked about - the full-length version of 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' from Miss Ross's magnificent first solo LP. (Lots of other fantastic tracks on there as well - watch this space!)
After having a pop at Mick Hucknall a few posts ago I'm making amends with one of the great records of the 80s, which really breathes in its extended version.
